A lesson to be learned, but a little laugh to be had!
It seems Lily the Miniature Horse and Joey
have a little problem! Lily is in training for nursing home visits and
volunteer Joey asked if she could work with her. We take her into the
unfinished house and the vet clinic for training after wrapping her tiny hooves
to prevent slippage.
This
exciting evening for Lily and Joey turned into a traumatic event however when
Joey took Lily up a flight of 8 stairs without first teaching the lesson that
needs to precede it: LESSON ONE is going down steps! Lily, Joey and Sue
pondered the situation for 2 hours, hoping to have the dilemma resolved before
Bill got home and tried a “man way”.
We covered the stairs with carpet to prevent slippage, but Lily made it clear that
she believed the best approach would be one giant leap! We knew she would land
on about stair # 5 and tumble from there. We laughed, and then we cried as Lily
passed several manure piles AND a huge urination on the landing! When it came
down to the final option, we had to anesthetize little Lily to bring her safely
down. By then it was 11 p.m.!
Can you imagine the cost to call out a vet to anesthetize a tiny girl that was
stuck on the stairs at 11 p.m.! It was one of those times when Sue was
especially glad to be a vet! Let all that read this traumatic tale learn a
valuable lesson- going down is as important as going up! Joey spent the
following day teaching Lily LESSON ONE!
